I remember this being one of the few liquors that would occasionally be in the house when I was a kid. My parents enjoyed an adult beverage from time to time, but it was usually wine or beer. The one real liquor that I can recall being in the house on a regular basis was a bottle of Wild Turkey. Well, time for that nostalgia to boomerang its way back into my life with a review of this bourbon.
Whiskey looks like whiskey. I'm sure a whiskey guy would be able to tell you some shade of brown that it is or why it leaves weepers in the way it does, and how that compares to another bourbon, but I know that this looks like whiskey. The aroma is heavy alcohol, wood, and a mild astringent. I remember having a sip from the bottle when I was young and this really brings back the sense memory.
First sip is buttery and burny. I have often heard bourbon referred to as being smoother than regular whiskey, but I'm not sure that's what these guys were going for. This is very... well, charitably, I would say it's bold. What I think is odd is that there is a nuttiness after it's gone, but I didn't get the Kentucky hug. Where is my hug? I WANT A HUG!
Subsequent drinking definitely smooths it out. Is it good? Well, no. I don't know what my parents were thinking. Presumably, they knew what they liked, and they chose this for a reason, but I couldn't tell you what it is. It's not particularly nice, and there are so many better options out there; I need an actual whiskey guy to explain this to me... maybe over a beer.
