It's been a little bit since I had a Yazoo beer, and I don't know if that is a consequence of me having already tried many of their beverages, their selection being relatively small (as they are a very small brewery), or the mostly undeserved negative impression that I still have of them based on conversations with other people from the Nashville area. Either way, it didn't stop me from picking up this interestingly named double IPA, and I am sure as heck looking forward to trying this sucker out.
The beer is a copper dark, but that is kind of to be expected with a lot of these double IPAs. The head is sticky as all get out, so I'm going to be seeing lots of lacing, and I always enjoy that. The aroma is grapefruit and orange peels, and it is quite engaging. The heft of the smell, combined with a light pine, really makes this a nice beverage to sniff. However, sniffing isn't what beverages were made for.
First sip is bitter, but not excessively so. Nevertheless, it is the defining characteristic of this beer. Adding to the bitterness is the orange and grapefruit peels, and they certainly lend themselves to entertainment as the cracker malt continues to give the heft that was expected in the sniff. Overall, the sip is just as enjoyable as the sniff was. If things keep going this way, this is going to wind up getting an excellent review.
Tip-in is sweet cracker malt with bitter undertones and very light carbonation. The middle is a little too much with the bitterness clouding up the enjoyment of the orange and grapefruit in the hops, but pine is still able to peek itself out. The finish is more bitterness with carbonation sizzling around as the pine chases bitterness into the trail off.
