I like apple. I like apple beverages. I even like apple whiskey, but can the known entity that is Fireball do an apple right? More importantly, is the "blazin'" on the label implying that they somehow merged the delicious cinnamon whiskey they produce in massive quantities with a gentle and demure apple? Will it work? Can it work? It all comes down to this review. Everything hangs in the balance with this entry on an obscure beer site where a guy occasionally tries whiskey that he admits he's not even close to an expert in.
I don't have to lean in to smell it. In fact, leaning away doesn't really help lessen the aroma coming off of the golden beverage. There is very light cinnamon on the outside of the Granny Smith-style apple scent. Well, it might be a cross between Granny Smith and Fuji. I really like Fuji apples, and I look forward to their inclusion.
First sip is a very strange blend of that cinnamon and apple. The apple is nearly lost in the cinnamon. I think something more like an apple pie mixture would be better, as this is really cinnamon-heavy. The apple starts things off, and it never really leaves, but it's not driving anything. It's along for the ride, as is the alcohol and my taste buds. It might mellow as it warms.
As time progresses, the cinnamon just about takes over. The burn in the back of my throat reminds me of the regular whiskey, and I am really wondering if this is a new formula, or if they just added apple flavor to the cinnamon. I mean, I liked the cinnamon fine, but this should really just be more apple. Maybe if they marketed it as cinnamon with a kiss of apple, I'd be a bit happier.
Bottom Line: Not a significant improvement.
