Honestly, I lost the Wiseacre logo on the can. I'm not sure if it just wasn't the right color, or maybe I just wasn't looking closely enough. But I thought that Sky Dog was the brand of the beer. And I figured that Chelada was the proper name for the beer. Turns out, I was wrong. I also initially assumed this was just a Mexican lager, as the label seemed to indicate it was so. However, I now see that it says 99 calories, and I also noticed that it's only 4% ABV, so this is actually a low calorie beer. Is it a low calorie Mexican lager? Well, they added lime and salt, and I would normally associate those with Mexican lagers. So, I'm just going to go ahead and say that it is. After all, there's no one here to stop me, and I will do as I want.
The pour is very ordinary for a Mexican lager. It is crystal clear in the center, gold in color, and produces not much of a head. In fact, the head disappears completely within a few minutes, and there are a few tiny little bubbles and very few points of nucleation at the bottom of the glass to indicate that this has any carbonation whatsoever. The aroma is definitely citrus, but I would not have pegged it as lime. It smells more like a lemon-lime, or maybe that's just because I'm so used to those two flavors being combined. I guess we're going to have to find out when we taste.
First sip makes me wonder if Chelada means sour beer. This beer doesn't taste very good, and it tastes quite sour. At first, I thought it was just going to be tart, but it got worse. Lime is here, and so is salt, but those were both featured on the label. This also has lemons, and I think that might be where the sour is coming from, although I don't know enough about sour beers to really know where the sour comes from, and I don't care. I just don't like it, and there's no use in dissecting something that I don't particularly like. I say that just as I'm about to gulp a beer that I already know I'm not going to like.
Tip-in is lime, salt, sour, and more carbonation than is visible in the glass. The middle has salt scrape the top of the mouth while lime and sourness collect in the center of the mouth. The finish is just terrible. I don't like these beers.
Bottom Line: Sour.
