Once again, I don't think I am drinking these in the right order. I didn't notice that both this beer and the strawberry version were doppelbocks. As a result, I had the one that had strawberry in it first. I should have tried it without the strawberry, but now I really fear that this is going to have that same vinegar taste to it that made me really, really dislike the other version. Who knows, it's possible that this is actually really good, and the strawberries were off whenever they got added.
The beer pours a solid gold, and the head doesn't last particularly long, but it leaves that strong ring around the sides, and there are tons of points of nucleation at the bottom of the glass to replenish the diminishing head. The aroma is bread malt above everything else, and there isn't much else. There might be a little bit honey hiding in there, but that's about all I can smell. Importantly, I don't think I smell that vinegar. I think I may have PTSD as a result of the vinegar.
First sip does not have the vinegar, but it isn't particularly good. It starts off sweet, then it turns somewhat sour, and the sour combining with the bitterness gives me a sensation that I cannot enjoy it all. The bread malt is there, and it tries to imbue the beverage with a certain kind of beer goodness, but there's only so much you can do. I'm not entirely sure what they've added to make this taste so bad, as I remember liking quite a few doppelbocks. At this point, I just want to get this review over with.
Tip-in in is bread with sweetness, but I start to get a twinge of what eventually becomes that vinegar in the strawberry beer. The middle is relatively fine, but it's watery, and there is still that weird taste probing at the free ends. The finish is terrible, and I don't want to taste the bitter, tart, vinegary, and offputting taste again.
