All I remember about that previous Dr. McGillicuddy's beverage was that it was apple, I generally liked it, and the whole vibe was a hoot. Clearly, they were going for the hipster audience (I mean, unless they are traditionalists that actually kept making that heavy and intricate glass bottle since 1865). I'm not that audience, but I found it interesting enough to pick this up when I saw it. This will likely be an entirely different experience, but it should still be a good one.
I don't know how well you can see the ever-so-slight blackberry color that has been added to what otherwise appears to be a clear beverage. I'm starting to wonder if they meant moonshine when they wrote whiskey on the bottle. There's no indication on the label that this has been aged like a whiskey and aging it properly would tend to give it that familiar caramel or brown color. The aroma is very light blackberries and a smidge of alcohol.
First sip is... not great. It seemed like it was going to be a smooth, fruity beverage at first, but botanicals and funk seem to hit immediately afterward. The warming sensation of heavy alcohol was almost lost in the confusion, but it eventually made itself known. I didn't like that sip, and I can't imagine this is going to get better, but I'll finish it and report back. Just a moment...
Subsequent sips are all very similar - sweet fruit up front and poison ivy on the other side. It gets moderately more tolerable as time progresses, but that doesn't make it good, and I'm not going to buy another one of these. I may avoid Dr. McGillicuddy's altogether.
