There is a point at which you are just drinking beer-flavored water. Is 3.6% where that strange concoction lies? I am reminded, after seeing the 90 calories, that low-calorie beers are not really all that low calorie. They do, however, manage to water down the alcohol while also watering down the taste. Then, after they have already dramatically altered the taste, they come back in to try and salvage something by adding flavor that doesn't really jive with the rest of the beer. That has been, unfortunately, my experience so far. Maybe this beer is going to change that.
If I were to guess, based on the pale yellow color and haze to the beer, I would probably have said this is some kind of watermelon beer or wheat beer. This is, in fact, neither. It does say "embrace the funk" on the can, so that implies I'm about to get some funk. What I won't get is lacing, as the head boils away quickly and leaves nothing but a bare top with points of nucleation reminding the drinker that carbonation exists. The aroma reinforces the concept that there will be funk in this beer. It smells hoppy, tart, and funky.
First sip isn't terrible for what it is. The back end is definitely as watery as any other light beer is, but the interesting concoction of hops combined with a strong wheat backing gives the front end quite a bit of character that could easily be mistaken for a regular beer. Mind you, I'm not sure that it's the kind of beer I would normally like all that much, but at least this sucker is trying. It is only during the proper swig that we find out whether or not it's trying too hard, and that's why we do it.
Tip-in is acidic with hops as the carbonation gently adds buzz to the mixture and funk is found alongside the wheat. The middle is as close to genuinely enjoyable as any low-calorie beer that I have had so far with the wheat and funk playing around with each other as citrus enjoys howling around with light carbonation. The finish is not as weak as I expected it to be from the sip, as the funk and wheat hang on pretty hard to ride this beer out.
