I'm not entirely sure what season this is intended for. There is a clearly legible date on the bottom of the can, and I am within two months of this beer having been canned, so I assume I am in the correct season for it. A lime lager seems like the kind of thing that I would really want to have in the depth of summer, but here I am in the middle of spring, and it appears to be the correct season for this beer. It was kind of a warm day today, so I am inclined to enjoy the refreshing nature of a beer that has little fruit added to it.
The golden beer is dark for a Mexican lager, but I like my beers to have a little more heft to them than your average Mexican brew. As the white head boils away, it leaves a somewhat patchy and thin layer that completely covers the top of the beer and a very significant amount of lacing that I did not expect and am overjoyed that I have received. The aroma doesn't have lime on the front end, but I can sense it lingering underneath with all of the other citrus flavors that combine with the solid malt to give this beverage a delightful smell.
First sip is more than I would ever have expected from a Mexican-style lager. The malt is very forward, and it is a bread malt that is almost verging on dough, but it lacks the yeast that I would normally associate with that kind of malt. The light lime is just spritzed on top, and it adds more of a refreshing character than this beer would otherwise be capable of. That said, I don't know that I would call the sip refreshing. It is a good sip, and it has loads of flavor, but it isn't as watery as most beers that would claim to be refreshing.
Tip-in is that heavy bread malt with significantly more lime than was in the sip while carbonation sizzles moderately around it. Carbonation shoots to the roof of the mouth as the malt continues to dominate over the citrus, and something isn't blending quite right in the middle. By the finish, the malt is starting to turn a bit tart while hops imbue a little bit of bitterness. Ultimately, the trail off is a disappointing letdown.
Bottom Line: Maybe the Mexican beer wasn't the right one to add the lime to.
