It's the shiny can. That's the reason I picked this up. I wasn't thinking about my previous Crown Royal experiences, and I wasn't thinking about what I think of Crown Royal in general. I wasn't even thinking about whether or not I like apples. There was a shiny can, and I picked it up. Once again, they have spent the extra money to make the embossing a little more three-dimensional than it needed to be, and it shows great care has been taken with the product. It makes me think that I'm going to like this beverage, and that's despite the fact that I'm pretty sure I'm not going to like this beverage. Goodness knows I'm going to want to like this beverage. After all, I paid money for it.Why wouldn't I have expected something that claims to be apple to come out the color of cranberry juice? Well, mostly because I expected it to look a little more like apples. Maybe it should look a little more like apple juice. I thought that there may have been a mistake like something that recently happened to me where I tried the Ole Smoky Margarita beverage, and when I poured out the contents, it was the blackberry lemonade. Mind you, I like the blackberry lemonade, but it wasn't what I purchased. Glancing at this label, I see cranberries are actually added to the beverage. Taking a whiff, from a distance, the whiskey can be clearly discerned from the beverage, and I'm not sure that much else can. If I try really hard, I can kind of make out condensed apple juice. It's the kind of apple juice that you get as part of a continental breakfast from a hotel where you can also have branded cereal from a container that crushes it as you turn a knob.
First sip is pretty bad. I can taste the cranberries, and they bring sweetness, but nothing overcomes that whiskey. It would be one thing if I thought that the fruit flavor was complementing the whiskey, but it seems like it's just in the way. And I say this as someone who does not particularly like whiskey. I still come back to the question of - who is this for? Who wants the taste of whiskey, but they want it watered-down with cranberry juice and - nominally - apple. They then want this concoction carbonated and put in a can.
Tip-in is watered down whisky with cranberries and just a hint of apples bringing sweetness. The middle isn't terrible, but it's kind of watery, and the whiskey feels almost upset about being mixed with these other flavors. The finish is whiskey heavy with cranberry and, if you really squint hard, you can probably see some apple.
Bottom Line: I need to stop buying this stuff.
