I've had quite a few Ole Smoky creams before, and I have had some of their moonshines as well. What strikes me about this beverage is that it is 17.5% ABV. Only two other products from Ole Smoky had a similar ABV, and this leads me to believe that they are not targeting a specific amount of alcohol in the cream before they decide on the flavor. What this means is that, unlike some seltzer's and such, they can figure out what the taste is supposed to be first, and then they get to the alcohol up to level it needs to be. As a result, you wind up with a much more enjoyable beverage that is more harmonious with its alcohol.Absolutely nothing new to say about the way this presents. It is not quite as chocolatey as other creams look, and it leaves weepers in its wake. I don't really have to lean into smell this, however, as the aroma is quite pungent. The alcohol is noticeable, and I'm not really sensing any of the chocolate, fudge, ice cream, whipped cream, or any of the things I would normally associate with mud pie other than coffee. Even the coffee seems very demure, and this is despite the previously indicated significant aroma. I guess the main force of the aroma is a mud pie that's been stuck in a blender.
First sip is sweet, dry, and it eventually turns bitter. The flavors definitely include the chocolate that you would expect, and the coffee is sedate enough that it's not particularly jarring. I'm not sure that I'm getting a whole lot else other than, obviously, cream that might be interpreted as a whipped topping, but this isn't whipped, and it's just cream. I can't say this is terrible, but I also can't say that I would go for it again just based on the first sip. I need to ruminate with this a while.
Subsequent sips reinforce initial notions. It appears, though, that warmth is helping it out a little bit, but it's bringing out a little too much of the coffee. The result is a beverage that is slightly better in some respects, but it's slightly worse in others. Considering I don't like coffee, I think I would prefer that it stay nice and chilled.
Bottom Line: Not a cream I'm going to need again.
