I go out of my way to try and not build up an expectation level for any given beverage. Sometimes, it's hard to do that, especially when you have already had a different beer from the same brewery, and it was great! There are times when a beer is based on a different beer - that is a slippery slope of expectations. This beer removes the hype from my own head and sticks it on the label as it proudly declares this to be the "Greatest Of All Time." We shall see.
Pouring black with an off-white head, the foam just doesn't have any staying power, and I check again to see if this is a barrel aged beer. It is not. This is confirmed by the 6.5% ABV that is generally high for a stout, but not high enough to reflect the introduction of brown liquor. The aroma is roasted malt, light coffee, and earth.First sip is thick and somewhat sweet with dark chocolate, earth, and coffee seeming to really dominate over the grains of the oatmeal. It reminds me that I haven't had an oatmeal stout in a while and they aren't a bad beverage to go with. This one is robust, and yet I feel like I could drink it all night long without getting annoyed by it. Is it the GOAT? Let's swig!
Tip-in is syrupy sweet with light carbonation and gentle grains. The middle picks up as carbonation darts around the mouth and the brown sugar, earth, dark chocolate, and grains have a little dance party in the center of the mouth. The finish brings a bit of bitterness from coffee as the chocolate and grains head for the trail-off.
Bottom Line: They are possibly correct in their title.
