The description of this beverage is quite confusing. It's a mango chili beer with lime. Is it an ale? Is it a lager? They don't say on the can, and (spoiler alert) they don't say on their website, either. I fell back to looking at various retailers to see how they classified this beer online. Almost unanimously, they refer to this as an ale, so that's what I'm going to go with. While I have had plenty of beers with mango, and a few with lime, I'm not sure I've had any that have had mango, chili, and lime. This should be a new experience.
The unremarkably pale yellow beer produces a minimal head that goes away to leave just stings of bubbles swirling around the center and strong ring around the sides. The aroma is almost entirely mango, and I can't smell any lime or chili. I guess there's a reason that they put mango in giant letters on the front.First sip is certainly mango-centric, but the chili is a slight heat that turns on after the beer is completely gone from the mouth. Is there a lime? I have no idea. I can't taste any, but that might be because the mango is so strong. Mind you, the mango's pretty good, so the entire beer is actually pretty enjoyable in a sip. Maybe a proper swing can tease out the lime and let me know if this has any hidden depths.
Tip-in is mango and very light chili with almost no carbonation at all. The middle swirls into delicious, sweet mango fruit meat with light chili powder sprinkled on top and a hit from the lime citrus strengthening the mango. The finish retards the mango and lets the lime come out slightly more before chili comes on for the trail off; the chili resurges moments after the trail off should have ended, but it's not entirely unwelcome.
Bottom Line: A surprising treat.
