The nights are very cold, and the days are too short, so I figured it might be appropriate to try a seasoned-themed cream. In this case, Granny's from Kentucky has this gingerbread-style cream that I saw on the shelf and inexplicably found a need to know what it tasted like. The good news for me is that I was already buying alcohol in the store, and this fit in my cart. I don't even remember how much it cost.
I had every intention of reiterating my standard line about all of these creams looking the same, but this one is significantly darker than the others. This looks more like a chocolate milk that isn't quite chocolate enough. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but it is definitely different. It has been a while since I had some actual gingerbread, but this smells exactly like what I remember gingerbread smelling like. It is sweet, and it has that slightly burned aroma that gingerbread gets whenever it is first out of the oven. This smells pretty good.First sip is all gingerbread. It is creamy, but that is an additional mouth feel to the flavor which is gingerbread. It is so mild that it made me look at the bottle to validate that this is, in fact, 12.5% ABV. I don't know where they're hiding the alcohol, but I don't taste it. Other creams might do well to copy this technique of reducing the alcohol to something below 15% and turning up the flavor to cover any burn that the alcohol would normally give. While I enjoyed the warming sensation that alcohol gives going down the gullet with a moonshine, a cream me a lot more gentle. This one is.
Subsequent sips remind me why I don't eat a whole lot of gingerbread. It is a particularly strong taste that has only one note. The inherent problem with that is that I kind of get over it very quickly. I don't need to taste gingerbread for the length of time that two gingerbread cookies would take. Similarly, I can see that this taste is going to become cloying very quickly. I don't want to ding it too hard for that, but it is an inherent problem with the flavor.
Bottom Line: Why not celebrate with a small glass a Christmas and then not touch it again until next Christmas?
