This looks like it'll be in the vain of Batsquatch, and I liked that. My sister in law recently told me how much she did not like that beer, so I guess I won't be suggesting this one to her, even if I like it. IF? Why am I even entertaining the idea that there's a chance that I'm not going to love this as much as its sibling? This is going to be great, and we all know it!
The cloudy, amber beer bursts forth froth upon opening the can, but the rest of the pour is much more manageable. I hope for lacing in every IPA, but this one is going to leave very little of it. The aroma is tropical and citrus fruits with thick fruit meat right out there for the taking. It smells very good.First sip is good, but the rather thick bread malt is combining with a pine that was not in the aroma to form a certain kind of malaise. The fruits are orange rind and apricot fuzz, and that seems to add to a certain kind of mustiness to the overall beer that immediately drags it down from the heights of my expectations, but they were inevitably set too high.
Tip-in is sweet orange rind and grapefruit husk with almost no carbonation to speak of. The middle fills the mouth with the thick bread malt and an interwoven pine that is not nearly as striking as in the sip, and it seems well suited to the task of augmenting the growing citrus and tropical fruits. The finish is a bit of an uneven drop into bitterness with fruits turning to rind and the pine coming on a bit too strong.
Bottom Line: Not bland in taste, but bland in feeling.
