This is my third and final Odd Side beer. The first one was tremendous, and the second one hit the average range, but it was just barely inside. Either way, after the heights of the first beer, the second one was definitely a disappointment. I only currently have three of these to go on, so this will set the tone for the brewery itself. If this can rise to meet the first, this is a great brewery that occasionally has a slightly below average beer. If this is an average beer, it's an average brewery that managed to get one good beer. If this is a bad beer, we have an inconsistent brewery that we can't trust.
They could have gone ahead and call this cloudy New England IPA, or maybe the horrific hazy moniker, but I'm kinda glad they didn't. The beer is mostly orange leaning toward copper, and the head is quite voluminous compared to its stable mates. Just getting it all in the glass took two pours, and that was with a relatively gentle pour. Fortunately for me, this means I get to see how much lacing there's going to be, and it is a beautiful site. I recently sniffed a citronella candle, and it smells like this has had various fruits dumped on top of a citronella candle. It's an odd smell.First sip is strangely dry with orange, grapefruit, pineapple, and papaya. I'm not going to say that the sip is an instantaneous loser, but I'm also not going to say it immediately hit it out of the park. Instead, we are somewhere in between, and it seems like it's leaning toward not great. The dryness really undermines the juiciness that should go with the fruits, and I'm not exactly sure how they even did that. Either way, we don't judge based on a sip.
Tip-in is citronella candles (even the wax) with grapefruit and papaya under a carbonation tingle. The middle rises, and I don't know where this was in the sip, with the juiciness gushing from the orange, grapefruit, pineapple, papaya, mango, and it is joined by some honey. The finish is once again dry, and it adds some bitterness, but it is much more satisfying after that solid center.
Bottom Line: Drink it right, and this rewards you.
