I've had Ole Smoky wears before, but I don't think I even knew that they bothered to age their moonshine to make it whiskey. As you may know, I do not frequently try out whiskey or similar hard liquors, so this will be a bit of a challenge for me to discern anything like what someone familiar with the beverages might find.
The color is vaguely deep yellow with a lean toward brown; not much else to see. The aroma hits as soon as the cap is twisted and is very strong with peanuts. I'm not entirely certain how much I'm supposed to notice the alcohol smell, but I notice it right away. I'm most curious as it whether I will be able to tell the difference between the moonshine and the whiskey backing. I mean, peanut butter should be a gimmie, right?First sip is like a peanut butter version of the maple moonshine I remember having and enjoying well enough. I absolutely cannot tell if this thing actually has been aged or if it's just moonshine with peanut flavoring added to make it palatable. BUT, this is my first sip, and it looks like I can get a few more out of this. My customary swig doesn't really come into it with hard liquors.
Second sip is warm and inviting right from the start with the peanut shells a bit forward before the smoothness of the backing liquor improves matters to the point that I can totally tell the difference between peanut flavor and peanut butter flavor. It leaves that familiar and welcomed warmth in the belly as it makes itself known the whole way down.
Bottom Line: More of it would probably wear out its wear or its welcome, but it's good sippin'.
