This beer has a lot of words on the can. I did not read them all, and yet I'm going to somehow manage to drink this beer. It is from Hi-Wire, so it has already won my heart. However, winning my taste buds is a whole different issue, and that's what this drink is for. I do see on the front that it says this is the beer to share with your seltzer friends, and I'm not sure that that's boding well. I've tried some of the hard seltzers (none reviewed, yet), and I am not a fan. Will I be a fan of this beer? Come take this journey with me.
The beer pours a particularly pale yellow. It looks more like tainted water than it does beer. I'm not sure if this was the color they were going for, but this is not the color I expect my beer to be. And I expect my beer to be many different colors. The head doesn't last long, and it puts me in mind of those hard seltzers. It doesn't leave much more than a dusting on the top of the beer, but points of nucleation are at least showing me that it's still carbonated. The aroma is quite zesty with lemon and lime above a relatively weak grain. Well, here goes nothing.First sip is surprisingly refreshing. I would call this beer crushable, if I wasn't just sipping so far. The strange combination of Sprite and beer that is represented in this beer is unusual to say the least. The beer is more of an aftertaste to the lemon-lime Sprite or 7-Up flavor. If this had come to me as a hard soda saying that it was a version of 7-Up, I would say was the wrong color, and that beer aftertaste would probably give it away. Nevertheless, it's pretty close.
Tip-in is sweet malt with lemon zest and mild carbonation tingle. The middle would not be easily confused with a soda, but it is particularly watery right through the center; however, the lightness of the lemon and lime almost make the odd wateriness of the center seem intentional and good. The finish is citrus rinds with a malt underbelly that clings on for the trail off.
Bottom Line: It's something different, and it's pretty darn good.
