Once again, the can art that Wiseacre picked is more distracting than it is enlightening as to what the beer actually is. It is set in the Antarctic, presumably, as there are clearly penguins in the mix. Then there are some puffins. Then there are some wolves? Then wolves with Penguin bodies? Than a killer whale with penguin feet? I don't know what any of this is supposed to mean. Am I even supposed to be trying to figure it out? Is this just the insane sketches from whatever Memphis' favorite mental asylum is?
The amber beer pours somewhat hazy, but I'm not going to go into my rant about how hazy is an overused word when describing these beers. The patchy, sticky head is very nice for this style of beer, and it strangely boils down to a triad of separated pods of thick bubbles with their backs against the solid ring around the sides of the glass and lacing peppering their wake as they go down to the top of the beer. The aroma is fruity with citrus fruits and what seems to be a biscuit malt. My confusion about the can aside, this is going pretty well.First sip is surprisingly good. It is a lot sweeter than most DIPAs I have encountered, and it is handling that sweetness well by not becoming a dessert beer. Instead, it uses it to balance the citrus very well with light orange and lemons mixing with a peach and nectarine. Genuinely, it is even better than I thought this was going to be. Maybe I can just ignore the can and enjoy the beer.
Tip-in is sweet biscuit malt with almost no carbonation to speak of and very light citrus just peaking out from its hiding place in the malt. The middle becomes festooned with quite a bit more carbonation that bubbles around the entire mouth while the smooth and sweet malt creates a path for all the citrus and tropical fruits that are in attendance. The finish is a sudden sweetness at the front of the mouth while a slight bitterness takes hold at the back where the fruits linger very briefly before darting off for the trail off.
Bottom Line: That is one good, solid beer. It could probably toned down the sweetness just a bit.
