On a whim, I picked this up after my sister in law and I had to wait for some sandwiches at a local sandwich place. She was intrigued by the very concept of the "pregame" beverage, and I had remembered hearing some horror stories about the birth of Four Loco. I'm impressed that they've managed to stay afloat, so maybe there is something there?
The simple beverage looks fairly unremarkable. There is a bit of weeping as the liquid is sloshed about in the glass, but the very pale yellow drink does little to even attempt to be visually striking in any way. The aroma is vaguely lemon with a boozy weight that is very noticeable. As my first Four Loco beverage, I am not dazzled with anything outlandish, I suppose.First sip is rather dull. The lemons taste artificial - like someone put some lemon drop candies is very watered down moonshine for a long while. Similarly, the alcohol is noticeable, but this lacks the astringent nature of a moonshine or other hard alcohol (which is not to say that 13.9% ABV is something to scoff at. Speaking of which - I wasn't sure how much was appropriate for a shot of this. I went with what I thought a shot of something like whiskey would be, but the bottle says it is a shot, so it is the whole bottle?
Tip-in is slightly tart with a sweetness that sweeps in quickly after it and that vague notion of lemons that are trying to conceal something. The middle is strangely nauseating with lemon rinds mixed into non-caustic grain alcohol that doesn't know what it's doing and doesn't care what it does to you. The finish is a wave of sweetness that collects the nausea to escort it out while trying not to take the contents of the stomach with it.
Bottom Line: I don't think I ever used the word nauseating in a review before.
