I haven't had a Lagunitas since before the pandemic started. I'm not sure if they just aren't shipping new beers or what, but I was fortunate to get this one to try out. To their credit, this brewery has had not a single beer fall into the bad category, and they have had several in the excellent one. For 22 previous beers, this is quite the reputation they have.
First sip is surprisingly sweet to start with, and it puts me off-kilter for the somewhat dry and bitter finale. Does that make it bad? No. Not at all. Still, I don’t know what I think about the sip. It’s slightly jolting, but (as I take an uncustomary second sip) it is quite endearing and soft. I think I could comfortably sip it all night. But I won’t.
Tip-in is gentle carbonation caress with lemongrass and grains atop sweetness. The middle rolls with a dramatic escalation of carbonation and a smooth, grainy river with lemon drops on the banks. The finish is a sense of dry as flowers permeate the mouth and then a bitterness joins in for the trail off.
Bottom Line: Simple and straight-forward, but it has a finish that is hard to get past.
