Whenever you see a rye beer on this site, it is more likely than not that either I haven't read the label closely enough, or it was part of a variety pack. This particular one came in a variety pack. I prefer wheat or barley in my grains, and I specifically avoid rye. Nevertheless, in this particular instance I have a beer in front of me to review, and it may very well be good. This whole hero line is well thought out and well marketed. Revolution knows what they're doing, and maybe they know rye better than I do.
First sip is much heavier in hops than it is in the rye that is featured right in the title. Yes, the rye holds on for a while after the beverage is gone from the mouth, but the tart tropical fruits dominate the flavor profile of the beer. The rye brings a dryness that doesn't seem to complement the hops particularly well, but it is not really detracting from it substantially with just the sip. This could go either way with a gulp.
Tip-in is tangerine, mango, and guava with a significant carbonation fizzle. The middle features the rise of harsh grains that meet the carbonation to cause quite a ruckus that overwhelms the tangy fruit. The finish is where the rye really starts to take over things and the beverage turns dry as a result.
Bottom Line: A good beverage let down by its ingredients.
