I was sure. I was absolutely sure I had already done a review of Red Stripe. I mean, I have certainly had it before, and it seems like the kind of beer that I would already have done review of. But no, when I scour my blog, I find that I don't have a single review of this beer. So, it is quite fortuitous that I received this as a gift recently, and I'm gonna review the hell out of this.
First sip is that biscuit malt mixed with sweet corn and a little bit of lemon to give it a slight edge. The problem is that it's only a slight edge, and other than that it's fairly forgettable. I suspect that's why, prior to opening this, I only had a vague recollection of what Red Stripe was like. It has been a while, and this beer just doesn't stick in the mind particularly well. Some beers would be better off not sticking around in my mind, but others could definitely use more of a personality.
First sip is moderate carbonation burn with the biscuit malt and sweet corn flexing their sweetness pretty soundly. The middle is a broad stroke of very vague and simple biscuit, corn, almost imperceptible lemon, and sweetness. The finish is a crisp snap where the flavors secede rapidly and all that's left is a sweet echo.
Bottom Line: Something so storied should not be so unremarkable.
