I had the IPA from these guys yesterday, and it was pretty great. Fact is, they haven't broken away with an excellent beer yet, but they have a bevy of great beers, and they certainly have the potential for something to break through. Their barrel-aged beer was the first of that kind of beer that really made me take notice of how good they can be. Let's see if they can break away with an old stand-by.
First sip is dry, bitter, and tart, but the dank is more of a funk. Does that make it better? Probably not. The fruits are there, and they are making the drink a lot better by pushing through the funk and the dryness. There is something about the mix of funk and dryness that is not doing good things to the rest of the beverage, but that kind of thing usually settles itself during a swig.
Tip-in is moderate carbonation burn with tangerine, orange, grapefruit, and pears. The middle is an unwarranted increase in carbonation to drown out what I can only assume are really good fruits and some kind of malt. The finish is dry and tart with a lingering funk.
Bottom Line: There's something in there, but it's trying too hard to get out.
