Blackstone has not been my favorite beer company. In order that I had them, the
Chaser Pale Ale got 1.75, the
APA got a 2.25, the
Nut Brown Ale matched that 2.25, and the
Oatmeal Stout dropped back down to 1.75. So, they are across the board below average. I wanted to like the local Nashville brewery, but they need to start making better beer. The bottle declares that they have made award winning beers since 1994, and I question whoever gave them those awards. Maybe THIS is the award winning beer.
It's a cloudy very light brown beer. Some might call it a murky, deep gold, but I would call those people liars (not to their faces - I'm not suicidal, those people are drunk and angry). The head dissipates to a fairly thick pillow on the top, and there's no real lacing to speak of. The aroma is that of burned malt. I can also detect a bit of a metallic smell to it, too.
First sip isn't a great one. This is an ale - where are the hops? It's that burned malt taste, mostly. I'm sure the brewmaster would call it caramel or oats or even possibly coffee, but it's burnt malt. I mean, it's scraped off the bottom of the frying pan after sitting on low heat for an hour kind of burned. So, a sip is not good. Let's see if getting a good swig will help.
Tip-in is a bit oatmealy with carbonation hitting the tip of the tongue. The middle brings a god-awful nuttiness and some dirt (some people would call it earthiness, but those people are apologists). Bitterness covers the middle, but it really comes to a head for the finish. With it comes more of the burned oats and I am freaking done with this beer. I don't like it. Sorry, Blackstone, but I just don't seem to like your beers.
