Seems like it's been a while since I had a red ale. I don't actually recall the last time I had one. This says that it is Irish style, and I had always been under the impression that red ales were an Irish style in the first place. Maybe I was wrong. I guess I should probably delve into the history of beer, but I have a beer sitting in front of me that I want to try. Maybe I'll look at history another day.
The beer is a bit brown to be a red ale, but it has enough red highlights to make a difference. The white head of tiny bubbles boils down to a giant lily pad in the center of a beer with the strong ring around the sides that you might come to expect. I don't see any lacing, and I don't know that there's going to be any. I take a sniff, and it immediately makes me look at the can to try and find a date. The malt is masked by a pervasive skunk. I don't know what it is in the batch of beers that I recently picked up, but they have all been pretty bad. This one has a best buy date that is 4 months from now. It was brewed about 2 months ago. This doesn't make sense unless the beer has had several heat cycles put on it to the point that it's skunked. I'm not even going to bother trying the beer, and I'm not going to buy beer at the place that I picked these up last. It doesn't make any sense, and I don't want to have to deal with this and waste my money again.
